Product Traceability
For many industries, retaining a comprehensive lot/serial number directory is a federal and/or customer requirement. The reason for lot/serial number traceability is to protect consumer safety. The Bioterrorism Act was implemented for this primary purpose. Without lot codes or other production identification, a manufacturer would have no way of telling “good” product from “bad,” should a product recall occur, forcing the company to recall all product in the market.
